PRO Tip: Priming Your Jet Pump

💧 PRO Tip: Priming Your Jet Pump

A properly primed jet pump is essential for reliable water flow from your lake, well, or cistern. Air in the system will cause it to lose suction — follow these steps to get it running smoothly:

🛠️ Step 1: Prep the System

  • Turn off power to the pump before starting.
  • Close the control valve on the discharge line.
  • Check that the foot valve or check valve is working — this keeps water from draining back.

💦 Step 2: Add Water

  • Remove the priming plug on top of the pump housing.
  • Fill the pump and suction pipe completely with clean water.
  • Replace the priming plug securely.

⚡ Step 3: Start the Pump

  • Restore power and let the pump run.
  • Slowly open the discharge valve to allow air to escape.
  • Watch the pressure gauge — it should build steadily.

🔄 Repeat if Needed

  • If the pump doesn’t prime on the first try, shut it off, refill with water, and try again.
  • Multiple attempts may be needed if the suction line was dry.

🧯 Bonus Tip

  • Keep a jug of water nearby at the cottage — you’ll always have priming water ready at the start of the season.

👉 Remember: A well-primed jet pump saves you frustration and protects the pump from running dry.
