PRO Tip: Test Your Smoke & CO Detectors

🚨 PRO Tip: Test Your Smoke & CO Detectors

Overview #

Your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are your first line of defense against fire and invisible gas hazards. 🏠
Regular testing ensures they’ll alert you when every second counts. Take a few minutes this season to make sure your home is protected. ⏰

Steps to Stay Safe #

  1. 🧭 Locate All Detectors
Identify where each smoke and CO detector is installed—usually in hallways, bedrooms, and near the kitchen or utility areas.
Every level of your home should have at least one smoke detector and one CO detector.

  2. 🔘 Press and Hold the Test Button
Most detectors have a clearly marked test button.
Press and hold it until you hear the alarm sound. If it’s weak, delayed, or silent, replace the batteries immediately.

  3. 🔋 Replace Batteries Regularly
Replace batteries at least once a year—even if the unit seems to be working fine.
A good reminder: change them when you adjust your clocks for Daylight Saving Time. ⏳

  4. 📅 Check the Expiry Date
Smoke detectors typically last about 10 years; CO detectors about 5–7 years.
Look for the manufacture or expiry date on the back—replace any that are past due.

  5. 🧼 Keep Sensors Clean
Dust and debris can reduce sensitivity.
Use a vacuum or soft brush to gently clean around vents every few months.

💡 Pro Tip #

👉 Interconnected smoke alarms (wired or wireless) mean if one goes off, they all go off—giving you more time to react.  If yours aren’t interconnected yet, consider upgrading for whole-home protection. 🔗
