PRO Tip: Preparing Your Lawn & Yard for Winter

🍂 PRO Tip: Preparing Your Lawn & Yard for Winter

A little prep in the fall makes for a healthier, easier-to-maintain yard next spring!

Lawn Care #

  • Final Cut: Mow your lawn slightly shorter than usual (but not scalped) before the first frost.
  • Fertilize: Apply a fall fertilizer to strengthen roots and boost spring growth.
  • Aerate & Rake: Break up compacted soil and clear fallen leaves to prevent mold.

Trees & Shrubs #

  • Wrap Young Trees: Use tree wrap or burlap to protect from sunscald and rodents.
  • Prune Dead Branches: Reduces storm damage risk.
  • Water Well: Give a deep watering before the ground freezes.

Garden Beds #

  • Clean Up Plants: Remove spent annuals and diseased growth.
  • Mulch Perennials: Add 2–3″ of mulch to insulate roots.
  • Plant Bulbs: Now’s the time for tulips, daffodils, and other spring favorites.

Yard Prep #

  • Drain & Store Hoses: Disconnect and store to avoid cracks.
  • Shut Off Outdoor Taps: Prevents burst pipes.
  • Clean Tools & Mowers: Wipe down, sharpen, and store with a fuel stabilizer if gas-powered.

✅ Taking a few hours now saves you time, money, and headaches when spring rolls around.
