Spring Jet Pump Priming

CSquared ProTip: Spring Jet Pump Priming #

Priming a jet pump is a critical rite of spring for cottage owners. Getting it right the first time prevents permanent damage to your pump’s seals caused by dry-run friction.

Preparation & Safety #

  • Inspect the Foot Valve: Ensure your intake line’s foot valve is holding water. If it leaks, your prime will drop immediately.
  • Power Off: Double-check that the pump breaker is OFF before starting.
  • Check the Housing: Look for hairline cracks caused by winter freezing.

Step-by-Step Priming #

  1. Open the Priming Plug: Remove the hex-head bolt or plastic plug on the top of the pump housing.
  2. Fill the Housing and Intake: Slowly pour clean water into the priming hole. ProTip: Use a funnel to reduce air bubbles. Wait a few minutes for the “burp,” then top it off again.
  3. Seal the System: Once the water level is steady at the top, apply fresh Teflon tape to the plug threads and tighten. It must be airtight.
  4. The 45-Second Rule: Open a nearby faucet slightly and flip the breaker. If pressure doesn’t rise within 45 seconds, turn the power off and repeat the prime.

Troubleshooting #

Symptom Solution
No pressure rise Re-prime and check intake connections.
Pressure drops after shutoff Replace the foot valve.

C2 Reminder: Ensure the system is thoroughly flushed of any winterizing antifreeze before use.
